How to choose semi-automatic pipe bender and CNC pipe bender?

In the world of pipe bends, there are a plethora of options, features, controls and concepts that can overwhelm a potential buyer.

So how to choose semi-automatic pipe bender and CNC pipe bender?

We will introduce the advantages and disadvantages of semi-automatic pipe benders and fully automatic pipe benders.

A semi-automatic pipe bender (also known as the NC series) is a basic machine that performs sequencing in sets of steps to bend the part using an NC control unit, which has a touch screen interface.

Basically, the steps are as follows:

1. The operator places the pipe into the mold of the pipe bender.

2. The pipe bender clamps the pipe and then bends the pipe;

3. The pipe bender stops and waits for the operator to remove the pipe;

4. The pipe bender returns to the starting position and is ready for the next bending.

The machine can have a limit switch to set the degree of bending, or an encoder connected to a programmable controller to set the degree of bending.

However, semi-automatic benders do not reposition bend angles or bend radii between bends.

In order to automatically bend tubes with multiple bend radii or bend angles, you need a CNC pipe bender.

A CNC pipe bender (computer numerical control unit) performs the same function and can automatically position the position between the bends, including the rotation of the pipe (B axis) and the distance between the bends (Y axis). Both of these measurements are critical and can be difficult to control with a semi-automatic tube bender.

Once the machine has positioned the tube in place, it goes through the same clamping, bending and releasing steps as a semi-automatic machine. But instead of an operator manually repositioning the tube, the machine uses carriages to hold the tube and move it to the next position before making the next bend.

Now that you know the difference between semi-automatic and CNC machines, to make this decision it is important to consider there main factors:

1. Number of bends per part - If you are making single bend parts, such as 90 degree elbows for electrical applications, a semi-automatic machine is usually sufficient as it can often work like a CNC machine. When there are multiple bends in a part, such as an exhaust system or fuel line, a CNC machine can provide greater repeatability, reduce operator involvement and improve performance.

2. Quantity per part - If you have custom work on the headstock for a race car one day, a custom set of handlebars for your motorcycle on the weekend, and then a custom roll cage for your dune bike, the CNC machine is probably more trouble than it's worth . Semi-automatic machines offer greater flexibility and more control over custom one-off parts. If you are likely to be machining multiple times on an item with multiple bends, a CNC machine would be a better choice because part programs can be stored and recalled later.

3. The future of your business – In this ever-changing world, new opportunities always arise. While a CNC machine with less operator involvement might seem like the best option, keep in mind that an NC machine can often do the same job as a CNC machine if you have a little extra time. If you foresee increased demand for a product you are producing or developing, a CNC machine may give you a competitive advantage because over time you will be able to run faster and reduce the cost per part. Cost compared to competitors using semi-automatic machines to make the same parts.
